From the early days of women’s suffrage to the provision of Buffalo Bicycles to communities across Africa to facilitate the movement of people and goods over rugged terrain, bikes have been moving communities forward for over 100 years.  In the last close to 10 years, Zwift has become another platform for continuing to move communities forward.

There are many teams on Zwift that use their events and their membership to do good in the world.  From fundraising efforts to raising awareness for good causes, the platform makes it possible to interact with riders from every part of the world while riding.  One team, Rocacorba, is taking this to another level by empowering women through access to and use of the platform itself.  The team is working with the Khaltsha Cycling Academy (the “Academy”) to get young women onto Zwift to build their power – through physical watts but also self-confidence and resilience.

The Academy, located in Khayelitsha Township in South Africa, empowers young girls through biking by partnering with Rocacorba Collective and real-life pro cyclist Ashleigh Moolman Pasio.  This partnership marries up riding in real life (“IRL”) and riding and racing on Zwift.  Young women in the community gather at their capsule-sized container with access to academic assistance, high-speed WiFi, smart trainers, and Zwift accounts.  The Academy, in other words, is providing the tools for these young women to be empowered academically, socially, and physically.

By including these young women in the Rocacorba team – training rides and team interactions specifically – these women see the wonderful wide world of racing from a community level on Zwift to the outdoor athletes sponsored by Rocacorba.  Seeing women around the world working hard on their own fitness and racecraft while supporting each other in a team environment provides these young women with examples of how individual growth can be richer and more satisfying within a community.

In their first year (2022-2023), the partnership supported 30 young women in training for the iconic Cape Town Cycle Tour held in Cape Town each year in March.  Rocacorba raised money to train, equip, and support the women, and Ashleigh rode the Tour with the women to witness their accomplishment.  The partnership continues to raise money to keep access to these resources for the women in the community.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have raced the biggest races in the world, and even win a few of them.  You can have the best equipment and best abilities, but if you don’t believe in yourself, it’s nearly impossible to succeed.”

Ashleigh Moolman Pasio

The Academy exposes these young women to elite athletes like Moolman Pasio who invest time and effort into them.  Rocacorba’s contribution to the Academy hinges on the idea that supporting these women through their training inside and outside will give them not just a glimpse into the athlete mentality but a sense that every rider matters – that we are all capable of working hard and doing great things.

Further reading: How Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio is using virtual cycling to change the narrative for African girls

Rocacorba believes that community is power, and that self-confidence is key to success (in Zwift and in life).  This position aligns closely with many international women’s organizations and with our own at FemmeCycle Collab.  Ride on, together, women of Zwift!

Why join a women’s race series like Iceni? https://zwiftinsider.com/why-join-a-womens-race-series/ https://zwiftinsider.com/why-join-a-womens-race-series/#comments Mon, 13 May 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=106081 When asked about competitive women’s-only racing on Zwift, most people would immediately think of the Zwift Racing League (ZRL).  This popular series offers women fast, electrifying racing against other women of a similar ability, while also working closely with up to five teammates to maximize the team result.  For many racers, ZRL is the only women’s specific series they participate in during the year.  But it only runs between the months of September and March.

Fortunately, there are a growing number of women’s only race series that could engender as much competitive spirit within the women’s community on Zwift.  The recently-held Iceni Racing Series is one example.  It offers women another opportunity to compete in the “off-season” in a fun, supportive environment.

So, what can you expect from a women’s race series like Iceni?

  1. Varied, strong fields.  Shorter, smaller series like Iceni offer an opportunity to race against larger fields, challenge you with a variety of different race formats, and require strategic planning for multi-day stage events.  In March of 2024, the Iceni series had over 250 participants over the 4 weeks of racing.  Races occur in the cross-over season, where those in the southern hemisphere start to move indoors and riders in the  northern hemisphere are not yet transitioning to outdoor riding.
  2. Individual style racing.  Iceni is also an individual performance race series, which makes tactics very different.
  3. All female broadcasting/commentating.  Having an all female broadcasting team adds a special sauce to this series.  With only 4 races, more time is spent covering each race in more depth.

Here’s what women had to say about the racing:

“Team eSRT took part of the ICENI race series, we had a blast!
Thank you Aeonian race team for a fun well organized series! 🙂
Team eSRT had a great series, our women performed, helped and pushed eachother, fun series, great efforts and results we all can be proud off! 🙂
– Team eSRT

“Thank you Karla for including us Aussie girls this time around.. I truly appreciated it.” – Tammy (AHDRL CherryBombs)

“Just to say the eSRT ladies all enjoyed racing the ICENI series so thank you so much for highlighting and giving an opportunity to celebrate Womens racing – the livestream was exceptional and the commentary was impressive. Congrats to all riders and all involved in bringing an awesome Month of Women’s racing!!!” – Vinnette Powell, eSRT

More praise for the series:

“A Great Series, thank you Karla awesome to have such many ladies to fight with throughout the month!”

“Awesome series, cheers for putting it together! Great challenge and great competitors”

“I really enjoyed it Karla – really appreciate the effort you put in to organising and manage all the races. Great fun watching the YouTube coverage too.”

International Women’s Day “Chasing the Dream” Race Announced https://zwiftinsider.com/chasing-the-dream/ https://zwiftinsider.com/chasing-the-dream/#comments Tue, 05 Mar 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=104580 International Women’s Day in 2024 is a day to “inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion” to “forge a better world.” “And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.”

This International Women’s Day (March 8), join your fellow women Zwifters for a Chase race on Makuri’s Turf N Surf! See all the details below…

About the Chase Race

This is a unique racing format that rewards you for working together with women in your category. Often in Zwift racing you are trying to beat the racers of your speed on different teams, so this race style really asks a lot of women – to come together and work towards a common goal with women they are often trying to beat. This format is a fitting tribute to International Women’s Day – to celebrate the strength of the collective and show that racers are faster together than they are apart. Each category has an assigned captain who will lead the discussion on Discord (links to the channels are in the event details) and try to turn a churning mass into one with motivation, direction, and a common purpose.

Get Chase Race tips from this Zwift Insider post >

Category D will start out first, with a 4-minute headstart on the C’s. Category B starts just 2 minutes after the C category, and then Category A will start 3 minutes after that, 9 minutes after the D category. The first person in each category to finish wins the race for the category. For instance, if a B category woman crosses the line first, then a D rider, then an A rider, the B cat wins, D cat gets second, etc. Each category has an assigned jersey and will be outfitted as follows once you enter the starting pen:

  • Category D – Zwift Academy 2020 Women’s jersey – starts on :00
  • Category C – Women’s Week 2018 jersey – starts on :04
  • Category B – Rapha Women’s Souplesse jersey – starts on :06
  • Category A – Voxwomen Tour jersey – starts on :09

Note: Racers will unlock that jersey for their garage once the course is completed.

We hope this is enough fun for both racers and spectators to warrant more of this type of competition, where non-racers can see the collaboration and effort needed to compete in races on Zwift!

All About the Iceni Women’s Series Races Beginning March 5 https://zwiftinsider.com/iceni-womens-race-series-2024/ https://zwiftinsider.com/iceni-womens-race-series-2024/#comments Sat, 24 Feb 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=103783 The Iceni Women’s Series is back! This popular women-only race series is celebrating Women’s History Month with a racing challenge each Tuesday in March. Powerhouses and strategists from category A through D are invited! See all the details below…

About the Name

In case you don’t remember your Roman history, the Iceni tribe was ‘peacefully annexed’ by the Roman Empire at some point before 47 AD, though it was allowed some autonomy. When the King of the Iceni tribe died and Boudicca I became High Queen of Iceni, the Roman Empire saw her unfit to rule and invaded the region. Iceni then led a revolt against the Roman Empire and regained its independence, along with the independence of several other tribes.

This led to the subsequent formation of the Comhairle, an alliance of the British tribes. Iceni had a major say in Comhairle affairs and became an important center of trade, military, and leadership. A prime example of women pulling society together, right?

Categories and Registration

This series uses standard A-D women’s categories, and category enforcement will be used. Categories will start and race separately.

Schedule and Route Details

Each week features two different league times, which change slightly throughout the month due to daylight savings time. You will want to race the same league time each week if you are competing for the overall series win.

This year there are four distinct challenges over the month, with each week being a challenge in itself as riders look to maximize their series points.

Week 1 (March 5) 18:00 & 23:30 UTC

  • Route: Sugar Cookie
  • Length: 1 lap – 39km (24.3 miles)
  • Power-ups: Aero, Anvil, Feather

This is one of the first major races on Sugar Cookie, a new route released by Zwift in October 2023, and the points in this race are tricky! The first sprint is FAL, but the second and third are FTS – so while the first sprint could encourage breakaways, the pack speed will be undeniably an advantage in the second and third sprints.  To finish it off, the fourth and final segment will be FAL followed by 15km more of racing for finish points, including a short, steep climb around 20 km.  Sprinters might have a chance to bag major FTS and FAL points, but will have a hard time with the 900 meter climb and furious racing after the segments are done. Prepare your strategies well for this one!

Intermediate Points :

  • Stoneway Sprint: top 10 First Across the Line (FAL)
  • Acropolis Sprint: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)
  • Sasquatch Sprint: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)
  • Woodland Sprint: top 10 First Across the Line (FAL)

Finishing Points: 75 – 1 points depending on your finishing position in your category.

Week 2 (March 12) 3 Mini races

Ready for some sprint-climb time? In this challenge, we’re adding a twist by featuring three short races for racers’ enjoyment. Be sure to choose bike equipment wisely, as drafting is disabled in the first two races.

  • Race 1 (18:00 & 23:30 UTC) Tick Tock (custom length, 2.3 km/1.42 miles)
Drafting disabled. Finish points only – fast, flat racing for those with the ability to produce the highest watts
  • Race 2 (18:10 & 23:40 UTC) Bell Lap (4 laps – 7.9 km/4.9 miles)
FTS points on each lap at the prime as well as finish points – racers will need to choose their strategy for this mini race carefully, as the segment points are fastest through, but the draft is still OFF for this race!
  • Race 3 (18:35 & 24:05 UTC) Cobbled Climbs (1 lap, 9.5km/5.9 miles)
Drafting enabled. Finish points and segment points: FAL for Libby Hill, followed by FTS for 23rd Street. This is tricky, because the longer Libby Hill climb is immediately followed by 23rd Street, but those off the front after Libby Hill won’t benefit from that gap when trying to compete for FTS within a km!

Finishing Points: 50 – 1 points depending on your finishing position in your category on each mini race.

Week 3 (March 19) 18:00 & 23:30 UTC

  • Route: Royal Pump Room 8
  • Length: 1 lap – 27.8 km (17.3 miles)
  • Powerups: Anvil, Feather, Aero

We are off to Yorkshire for week 3 with 2 QOMs and one sprint segment in play. Again, racers will have to think about their strategy for this course, as only FTS is up for grabs on the first sprint (right out of the gates, where everyone will have fresh legs), and then the Yorkshire QOM and Yorkshire Reverse QOM come within 5km of each other.  Racers will likely target one or the other QOM. However, your strategy for this course might have to be dictated by the powerups that you get – with the anvil and the feather in the mix, each racer will have to adjust on the fly to get the most out of them.

Intermediate  Points :

  • Yorkshire Sprint Reverse: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)
  • Yorkshire QOM: top 10 First Across the Line (FAL)
  • Yorkshire QOM Reverse: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)

Finishing Points: 75 – 1 points depending on your finishing position in your category.

Week 4 (March 26) 18:00 & 23:30 UTC

  • Route: Casse-Pattes
  • Length: 1 lap – 23.9 km (14.9 miles)
  • Powerups: Feather, Aero, Draft

The last challenge of the series takes us to France, where riders, once again, will need to focus on their strategy to score the most points.  Two sprints and two QOM’s are in play, all in the back half of the race, with the first up being a FAL sprint! (Breakaway, anyone?) But if you miss the FAL points there, you’ll have a good chance at FTS only a few kms later on the Aqueduct with a bigger group.  So what will you go for?  FAL, or FTS?

Intermediate Points:

  • Pave Sprint Reverse: top 10 First Across the Line (FAL)
  • Aqueduct QOM: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)
  • Petit QOM: 75 – 1 points First Across the Line (FAL)
  • Marina Sprint Reverse: top 10 Fastest Through Segment (FTS)

Finishing Points: 75 – 1 points depending on your finishing position in your category.

Final Results

The winner of the series is the rider who has accumulated the most points in their category, in their league. Each time slot has its own league.

A Vibrant Community https://zwiftinsider.com/wmn-community/ https://zwiftinsider.com/wmn-community/#comments Fri, 08 Dec 2023 19:49:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=103498

As Stacy Sims says in her 2016 book Roar, “Women are not small men.”  Our racecraft is different, our power profiles are different, and our competition is… different.  For many of us, racing against women is uplifting in a way that mixed racing is not.  Women’s racing has developed the way many women’s communities do – out of a sense of togetherness rather than a need to distinguish oneself.  The racing can be as fierce as on the mixed side, but the training beforehand and the support afterward certainly isn’t.  Many of the best women’s racers on the platform with a penchant for teaching have stepped up to help those of us who want to learn and grow as riders.

For example, Gabi Guerra has started leading a weekly sprint training session where a group of women practices the technical side of racing – spinning your legs fast and jumping your power up to sprint pace.

The group stays together and the ride is open to women of all ability levels and teams. Throughout the sessions, Gabi fields questions and gives advice based on her training and experience.  She also points out women in the group who are great sprinters so others can see the avatars’ acceleration.  This type of support helps women improve their cycling skills and feel more confident in their ability to race.

Another prime example of women building up women racers is Alice Lethbridge, currently on The Coalition. Alice has spent immeasurable hours helping multiple women’s teams develop to their full potential by explaining race tactics, helping with the technical implementation of those tactics, developing individual riders to the best version of themselves, and DS’ing the ZGP women of The Coalition.

If you ever raced against a team developed by Alice, you know just what that teaching added to the team.

In a third prime example of women helping women, Karla, the co-founder of Aeonian, along with her core management team, spends time with each racer developing their virtual racing abilities and understanding of strategies used in Zwift racing. Additionally, the team equips them with terrain knowledge and tactical insights, ensuring readiness for various scenarios that may unfold during the race.

This expertise is often the difference between a podium finish and a back-of-the-pack finish.

Finally, the advocates for women’s racing are not limited to women racers.  James Bailey, formerly of Herd and now working for Zwift, has been a tireless advocate for women’s racing since he led the HERd SHEries in 2018.  He not only has a wealth of information on the logistical setup and participation rates of women’s series, but is always advocating, connecting, and supporting women organizers.  He was the first to point out to me, when I wanted to put on a women’s series, that there are, and have been, many great women’s series, but not enough racers to participate in all the races.  His support of women’s racing is impressive and highly valued by the women’s racing community.

Racers like Gabi, Alice, and Karla, and supporters like James, make now an awesome time to jump into women’s racing.

A Brief History Of Women’s Racing on Zwift https://zwiftinsider.com/womens-racing-history/ https://zwiftinsider.com/womens-racing-history/#comments Fri, 08 Dec 2023 19:44:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=103495

Women’s racing on Zwift isn’t new – Karla Williams at Aeonian has been racing since the end of 2017 in women’s-only races.  A look back on ZwiftPower at that race shows some of the major players are still on the platform six years later, including Jenn Real.

While the fields started out very small, women-only racing has always attracted women who want something a little different than the average testosterone-filled mixed race.  Since 2017, many of the great Zwift teams have organized women’s series, including Fearless, Herd, Rocacorba, Team Swedish Zwifters, and SRAM. Many of these races are amazing and include a bit of… je ne sais quoi. Great racing, great camaraderie, great courses for women, and just a feeling like you are racing on a level playing field – like if you try to jump off the front you have a chance to get away, or if you fall from the front group you might not be doomed to iTT (solo ride) your way through the rest of the race.

As fabulous as the race organization is, the field sizes in the women’s races have always struggled to match their mixed-division counterparts.  In short, women’s racing needs you, Zwifter woman, to make it better.

Women’s Teams on Zwift https://zwiftinsider.com/womens-teams/ https://zwiftinsider.com/womens-teams/#comments Fri, 27 Jan 2023 00:22:00 +0000 https://zwiftinsider.com/?p=103017

Zwift is a platform that has always sought to make cycling social, whether you are riding for a fun fitness option or training for a race.  Joining a team with a women’s contingent can bring a lot of joy and organizational, logistical, and technical assistance.  Plus, the conversations on Zwift, on Facebook, and in Discord servers are helpful at least and uplifting and nourishing at best.

There are so many great teams out there, and joining one is the first real step in the journey to discover your inner racer.  Below is a list of major women’s teams. We’ll be building out this list with descriptions of each team and an explanation of how to join.

Absque Fines p/b Wolfe

Pronounced “aub-sqwey finesse”, this team was originally made possible by friends who wanted to race together on the A circuits. We focus on getting a true race experience out of each event—recons, race prep and practice attacks/scrimmage, DS on-staff with racers, post-race write-ups, etc. We are very small and close-knit because of it. We look for willing participants who will invest themselves into the team and show up on a semi-regular basis for all kinds of races, not just ZRL.

Aeonian Race Team

Aeonian Racing Team is an inclusive women’s eracing team. Our goal is to promote Women’s cycling and empower women of all abilities across all categories, for any female identifying athletes. We take pride in our mission to support, empower and develop riders, helping them achieve their individual aspirations. We believe that with the right support you can achieve anything and everything. WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

AHDR

AHDR stands for Aussie Hump Day Riders. We are one of the most largest zwift teams, co founded in the early days of Zwift creation. We are a diverse Australian team that accommodates lots of timezones across the world. We promote Fun, Fitness and Friendships. Everyone is supported to flourish.

ATOM Racing

ATP

ATP is an ALL-inclusive mixed team.  It is important to us to support all identified women in multiple areas of cycling. We have been racing TTT and ZRL since the inception of both venues.  Our primary focus now is ZRL, mixed teams with focused women’s teams (Eastern, and Western America Division) but we continue to TTT, participate in Duathlon league, Herd weekend series, and SNOW sprint series when it is running. We believe in grassroots development, so our D racers are as integral to the team as our A racers. We don’t actively recruit. We don’t want to be too large of a team where we don’t know each other.  We keep our membership open to friends and if someone approaches us to join. Lastly, our team is active racing IRL in multiple sports including triathlon, duathlon, marathon, road, gravel, mtb, and cyclocross.  We even race motorcycles and cars. We do it all.

BellaVello

Dedicated to women who cycle  – a community of like minded women who support each other on and off the bike. One of the largest women-only cycling clubs in London, UK. Based out of Richmond Park offering weekly social rides, club rides around Windsor and Surrey Hills, away days around the country, and support with training for events. With around 300 club members, BellaVelo has nearly a third on Zwift, training and racing as part of the team or enjoying social rides.

Betty Squad

The Betty Squad is a worldwide group of like-minded women who embody the spirit of being a Betty. The brand Betty Designs was founded by Kristin Mayer in 2010. It initially started as a triathlon focus for women but has moved to all facets of endurance wear including branching into Zwift Racing in 2020. We are strong, spirited, athletic + keep fitness fun, + fashion at the forefront. We play hard, work harder + feel confident in our skin, skin suits or wetsuits while we do it. Whether you ride 200 miles per week or 20 – being a badass means having the courage to do it, whatever that “it” is for YOU. To show up. To be confident in the skin you’re in. To be the best you can be in all areas of your life, even when things get tough. Bettys are powerful alone, but together we are unstoppable.

BL13

The BL13 Women’s team started forming at the beginning of 2023. We are a group of former national and world champions and Olympic competitors. We enjoy supporting and encouraging each other. We enjoy hard, innovative, and fun racing while endeavouring to play a crucial role in creating a positive and encouraging space for women in the eSports cycling world.

BMTR

BMTR stands for Bravery-Motivation-Teamwork-Respect. BMTR was founded by a group of online cyclists who promote fitness and friendship where no ONE person is bigger than the group. We celebrate each other – our successes, our growth, and who we each are. We motivate each other to be our best selves.

The Coalition

The Coalition is an amazing community of people who love to ride and race. Our club has a strong women’s sector that is both supportive and nurturing of women’s personal goals through training and racing.  We support existing verification processes set out by events and endeavour to uphold fair racing. Our members sometimes TTT with other teams, but otherwise, they race solely for Coalition.

Our core values are inclusivity, empowerment, and most of all, to have fun! With Drafting Dinos, no rider is too slow to race with our club.  Everyone is valued and encouraged to participate, whether they’re looking to race or join us for a weekend endurance ride.  You can find us racing in Zwift Racing League, WTRL Team Time Trial Thursdays, Flamme Rouge Racing, and Club Ladder. I Race Like A Girl

Team I Race Like a Girl formed in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown. We started as a group of 7 professional triathletes who were teammates and/or friends, using weekly Team Time Trials as a way to continue to race and stay connected. Our squad quickly grew to well over 100 as we invited friends, almost all of whom were new to Zwift racing when they joined. We’re connected to the real-life I Race Like A Girl team run by Angela Naeth, who was one of our founding members. We are a team that focuses on inclusion, healthy relationships with sport, and community connection. We still have a large percentage of triathletes, but also plenty of pure cyclists, and lead multiple group rides and workouts for the broader community each week. We aim to grow and develop our team organically and ensure that every athlete who wants to race has the opportunity and support to have a good experience.
